Sania Mirza, a former World No. 1 in doubles who has brought great glory to the country for her accomplishments on the tennis tour, has decided to hang up the racquet after nearly two decades on the professional tennis tour. Saina Mirza, who is married to Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik and the mother of their son, Izhaan Malik Mirza, is an inspiration to many women. She has always led by example and made a roaring comeback to the court even after maternity. (Sania Mirza Retirement News)

Mirza, who is competing in her 14th Australian Open and is in her 19th year as a professional on tour, found it difficult to work around her conditions.

“I think my body is wearing down. My knee was really hurting today and I’m not saying that’s the reason we lost but I do think that it is taking time to recover as I’m getting older,” Sania states, “woke up with wrist pain couple of days ago. At 35, I am waking up with couple of things that I don’t know where they’re coming from! I want to finish the season, to at least play until US Open, that is my goal. But I still have to take it week-to-week.” (Sania Mirza Retirement News)

In singles, Sania Mirza had a career-high ranking of 27. Currently, she is ranked 68th in the world. Mirza, the first Indian woman to win a Grand Slam, has also won medals at the Asian and Commonwealth Games in doubles. Her most recent Grand Slam came in 2016 at the Australian Open alongside Martina Hingis, with whom she created one of the most successful women’s doubles teams in history.

The star player hasn’t been as active on the WTA tour in recent years, first due to her maternity leave in 2018 and then because to the pandemic that struck shortly after her return in 2020. Her most recent triumph came in September 2021, when she and Shuai Zhang won the Ostrava Open for the 43rd time. (Sania Mirza Retirement News)
