Djokovic Visa Cancelled Again
Vishalakshi Verma, New Delhi:
Djokovic Visa Cancelled Again: Novak Djokovic’s hopes of competing in the 2017 Australian Open have been severely harmed after his visa was once again revoked by Australia. On Friday, Australia revoked Djokovic’s visa for the second time in a row, putting a stop to his attempt to remain in the country and compete in the Australian Open while unvaccinated. Alex Hawke, Australia’s Immigration Minister, made the decision. This decision will likely leave the Australian Open without one of its biggest stars, with Djokovic unable to defend the title he has won nine times.
Novak Won a Court Case Against the Australian Government
Djokovic might be effectively barred from returning to Australia for three years unless he can provide convincing reasons, such as Australian national interest grounds, in future attempts. Last week, the Serbian tennis player won a court case against the Australian government’s decision to terminate his visa after he came to the country unvaccinated and with a ‘medical exemption.’ Hawke dismissed the Australian government’s court victory on Monday, claiming Djokovic’s visa was revoked solely on the basis of “procedural fairness.”
Novak Lawyers Are Likely to File an Appeal
The announcement followed Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s remarks on Thursday that he expects authorities to respect the government’s rules requiring non-citizen, non-residents to be fully vaccinated or have a valid medical exception. Djokovic’s lawyers are likely to file an appeal with the Federal Circuit and the Family Court, as they did when his visa was canceled the first time.
