Australian Open 2022 : Australian Open’s no.2 seed Daniil Medvedev cruises past Swiss Henri Laaksonen on his opening match on Tuesday. Daniil, the title favorite beat Laaksonen with a score of 6-1, 6-4, 7-6 (7/3) in 1 hour 54 minutes at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne. Medvedev is looking to win the Australian Open after last year’s US Open crown. (Australian Open 2022)
The Russian hopes to win the Grand Slam after losing from Novak Djokovic last year, after Djokovic’s deportation, he is the tournament favorite to secure the crown.
After two comfortable set wins, Daniil faced tough opposition in the third set which led to a tiebreaker. The World no.2, on his third set stated, “I tried to win the third set, I thought I’ll wait, it managed to work out, so I’m really happy about it”. (Australian Open 2022)
Medvedev also voices out on his season’s expectations as well his previous year’s achievements, “I started well in Australia last year, won the ATP Cup and managed to be in the final here. I like to play here; I like hardcourts and I want to do better than I did last year.” (Australian Open 2022)
Henri Laaksonen was much more aggressive in the second set and continued the mentality into the tiebreaking third set. Although the Russian was in control of the game with his groundstrokes.
